Singing and praying during exposition?

Question

Question

We got a new pastor recently and he is making us read scripture and sing songs when we change people during our adoration bands. What I mean is this, that when the next adorer comes at 3:00 p.m., we are asked to sing a psalm or song and read some scripture. Then the 2 p.m. person leaves until the next time switch at 4:00 p.m. Why are we doing this?

Answer

Answer

Both the Roman document Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass and the United States ritual book Order for the Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist state:

During the exposition there should be prayers, songs, and readings to direct the attention of the faithful to the worship of Christ the Lord.

To encourage a prayerful spirit, there should be readings from Scripture with a homily or brief exhortations to develop a better understanding of the eucharistic mystery. It is also desirable for the people to respond to the word of God by singing and to spend some periods of time in religious silence [OSEHE 15].
