Standing or kneeling for the vows?

Question

Question

At many weddings you see the bride and groom either standing or kneeling during the ceremony, especially for the vows. What does the ritual say?

--Knew in Knoxsville?

Answer

Answer

The 1614 Roman Ritual had the exchange of consent before the nuptial Mass, sometimes actually outside of the church on the porch, or gathering area. The rubric stated that the couple should kneel before the altar with the priest facing them. In the 1969 (and current) Rite of Marriage the rubrics specifically note that all should stand for the exchange of consent and rings, especially the bride and groom.
