I recently was surprised in a rural parish, on vacation, to experience a Funeral Mass on Sunday, like a regular Mass, except for the casket and some prayers for the body and family. Is this permitted?

The 2000 General Instructions of the Roman Missal 336 permits the funeral mass on Sundays in Ordinary Time. It may also be done at the regular Sunday Mass time.
