Layers

Our fish pond, reflective of society here in Kenya. So many layers. When I saw it I could not help thinking of M.C. Escher's Three Worlds. There are at least that many here.

People have lived here in their traditional ways for a long long time. They are like fish swimming effortlessly in the water. Rising out of the water there are the European transplants, their compounds like waterlillies, beautiful, yet standing out against the landscape. There are also many others who come, like the bees, to work for the Europeans whose money is like nectar to a parched economy. All these intertwine here under the African sun.

This song is a version of the Gloria from Zambia. "Glory to God in the Highest, and peace to all people on Earth!" it proclaims. The words came from the middle east, brought here by European missionaries and then incluturated into the local dialects and rythmns.
